Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is a beautiful city in the far northern part of Thailand near the mountainous border with Myanmar. I spent a week there last year and it was one of the most relaxing and peaceful places I have been yet.

My Adventures in Asia

This blog is simply a collection of my experiences in Asia. I left the USA in 2014 at age 56 to explore a bit of the world and to broaden my horizons. So far I have not been disappointed in that decision. I have lived in both Malaysia and Thailand (my current home) and have also visited Laos and Cambodia. Lumpinee Park

Lumpinee Park is the "Central Park" of Bangkok. I try to go at least once a week to exercise and to walk around as it really is a beautifully landscaped park and offers a great respite from the noise and hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

Thai School Experience

As many of you already know, I spent 2 years teaching English in public schools in Bangkok at the high school level. High schools here are 6 years, essentially the USA system of middle and high school rolled into one. High school is called 'Mattayom' so a first year student would be commonly called "Mattayom 1" or simply "M-1" which would correspond to our 7th grade in the USA. "M-6" students would be high school seniors. My experience in Thailand was a mixed bag. The days were long and hot and a lot of administrative BS is required to survive inside a Thai school as a foreign teacher. The students are not very studious (in general terms) and classes can be large and always very noisy. Having said that, some of the students are simply quite charming and I will never forget the good ones, so all in all while the pay was very low in relation to the effort expended, the experience was priceless and I am richer for having survived it.
