Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is a beautiful city in the far northern part of Thailand near the mountainous border with Myanmar. I spent a week there last year and it was one of the most relaxing and peaceful places I have been yet.

This blog is simply a collection of my experiences in Asia. I left the USA in 2014 at age 56 to explore a bit of the world and to broaden my horizons. Bangkok Lifestyle

As many of you know I live in a small studio apartment (really a room). It has both advantages and disadvantages. The plus side is I live in an affordable, clean and well run building. It is dead quiet as far as other residents and I overlook a quiet backwater of a Thai neighborhood. It also has a very large 60 square foot balcony which is my refuge and makes the room feel a whole lot bigger than it is. Having said that, it has a few disadvantages, the main one being the lack of a dedicated kitchen. For most dwellers of these types of buildings, it is not a big deal because almost everyone eats out or buys prepared meals readily available on the street. I also do this but I love to cook and also want to control the healthy eating aspect of my mealtimes. Recently I have made some progress in setting up an impromptu kitchen area with a new toaster oven which makes my life easier and a lot more enjoyable. Traditional Thai Street Food: Jim Jum

There is a small street side restaurant near the local mall that my Thai friend likes to go to which serves mainly traditional North Eastern Issan Thai food. One of their specialties is something called "Jim Jum". "Jim Jum" is a traditional Thai hotpot which consists of a boiling clay urn of broth into which you cook various vegetables and usually pork parts (some offal) and an egg. It also is traditionally served with thin glass noodles. It is a very hearty dish which may be off putting to some due to the pork offal but if you want to experience real Thai street food, it is a must to try when you are here. We also ordered some Duck "laarb", a minced meat salad and Som-Tam, spicy papaya salad which basically gets eaten with just about everything in Thailand.
